About WHA
The Washington Housing Authority has provided safe, decent, and sanitary housing for the residents of the City of Washington since its establishment by the City of Washington and chartered by the State of North Carolina in 1961. The Washington Housing Authority has played a vital role in providing housing for the city's most vulnerable residents.
Moving ahead from our 60th anniversary year (2021), our slogan of "So Much More Than Housing" helps guide us. We strive to provide services that will break generational cycles of poverty and build wealth for the families that we serve. WHA has partnered with various county agencies and entities to make this vision a reality for our families.
We provide housing through the Low-Income Public Housing Program and the Housing Choice Voucher Program. Currently, WHA owns and manages 383 public housing units and has over 200 participants on the Housing Choice Voucher Program.
WHA offers the following programs, services, and initiatives:
- 3on3on9th Basketball Tournament: Annual community tournament for residents and other outside WHA communities
- FSS: Family Self Sufficiency Program
- Homeownership
- ROSS: Resident Opportunities and Self-Sufficiency
- Washington Housing Scholarship Fund
- YEAS: Youth Enrichment, Arts and Sports Support
